AI Search Visibility

What is AI Visibility Score?

The diagnostic metric that tells you exactly how visible your business is to AI-generated search — not Google rankings.

AI Visibility Score — Definition

An AI Visibility Score is a composite diagnostic metric scored from 0 to 100 that measures how consistently a local service business appears in AI-generated search responses from systems including ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini.

A score below 40 indicates the business is effectively invisible to AI-generated local recommendations. A score above 70 indicates strong citation presence for primary service queries in the local market. The score is calculated across seven components totaling 100 points.

The AI Visibility Score is a proprietary diagnostic developed by VisiGap — an AI search visibility audit service for US local service businesses.

The shift

Google rank no longer predicts AI citation

As of late 2025, AI-generated answers intercept a significant share of the queries that used to send traffic to local business websites. A business can hold the number one Google ranking and simultaneously have an AI Visibility Score below 30 — invisible to the new search layer.

The queries AI intercepts are exactly the ones that used to drive inbound calls before a customer called you: "how much does HVAC replacement cost," "best personal injury lawyer for car accident," "what does roofing insurance cover." These queries triggered AI Overviews 37–97% of the time by Q4 2025. Your website used to answer them. Now AI does — usually citing a competitor.

Scoring model

The 7 components of AI Visibility Score

Each component measures a distinct signal AI engines use to decide whether to cite a business. The total score is 100 points. Most local businesses score between 20 and 45.

01 25 pts

Citation Source Coverage

The percentage of the 52 primary data sources AI engines use to ground local recommendations that have your business listed with accurate, consistent information. This is the highest-weighted component because AI engines cannot cite a business they cannot verify from multiple sources.

Common failure: Most HVAC, roofing, and plumbing businesses are accurately listed on fewer than 23 of 52 sources. The top-cited competitor in their market averages 38+.
02 20 pts

Query Retrieval Rate

How often your business appears in AI-generated answers when VisiGap simulates the five most common local search queries for your service category and city. Each query simulation is run across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity separately.

Common failure: A business scoring below 8/20 appears in fewer than 2 of 15 simulated AI query responses for its primary service and location.
03 15 pts

Entity Recognition

Whether AI engines can unambiguously identify your business as a named entity for your specific service category. Entity recognition depends on schema markup type, knowledge graph signals, and the consistency of how your business is described across all digital surfaces.

Common failure: Using generic "LocalBusiness" schema instead of the specific type — "HVACBusiness," "LegalService," "MedicalBusiness" — drops entity recognition scores significantly. AI cannot cite what it cannot classify.
04 15 pts

Data Consistency

Whether your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) match exactly across all citation sources. Even a single character difference — an abbreviated street name, an old phone number, a missing suite number — reduces AI confidence in the business's identity.

Common failure: Businesses that have moved, rebranded, or changed phone numbers in the last three years frequently have 8–14 citation sources still carrying old information.
05 15 pts

Content Extractability

Whether your website contains structured, quotable content that AI systems can retrieve and cite in generated responses. FAQ content, service-specific pricing context, and explicitly city-named content are the highest-weight signals. Thin service pages score near zero.

Common failure: FAQ presence is the near-decisive signal for AI citation. Across VisiGap audits, 78% of businesses in home services categories have no FAQ schema on their primary service pages.
06 5 pts

Competitor Citation Gap

How your citation frequency compares to the top three local competitors in your primary AI query set. This component does not add points for absolute performance — it adds points for relative performance. A market with low average scores still rewards the local leader.

What this reveals: The competitor being cited in your market right now. Often it is not the largest firm — it is the one that fixed its structured data 18 months ago.
07 5 pts

Fan-Out Query Coverage

The number of distinct query intent variations — not just your primary keyword — that retrieve your business in AI-generated answers. A business that only appears for "best HVAC in Chicago" but not for "how much does AC replacement cost in Chicago" has a fan-out coverage gap.

Why it matters: Cost and comparison queries trigger AI Overviews 37–97% of the time. "Near me" queries trigger them only 12%. Most businesses optimize for the wrong query type.

Why they diverge

AI Visibility Score vs. SEO score

These two metrics are not correlated. A business can score 82 on an SEO audit and 24 on AI Visibility. The ranking signals are different. The content signals are different. The citation infrastructure is different.

SEO Score measures
Keyword rankings — position in Google organic results
Domain authority — backlink profile and referring domains
Page speed — Core Web Vitals performance
On-page keywords — density and placement
Technical SEO — crawlability, indexation, redirects
AI Visibility Score measures
Entity recognition — AI's ability to classify the business
Citation source coverage — presence across 52 AI data sources
Content extractability — structured content AI can quote
Data consistency — NAP accuracy across all sources
Query retrieval — actual appearance in AI-generated responses
Why it matters in practice

A personal injury law firm that has spent $8,000/month on SEO for three years can hold the top Google ranking for "car accident lawyer Chicago" and simultaneously be absent from every AI-generated response to "how much does a personal injury lawyer cost in Chicago" — a query that triggers AI Overviews 97% of the time. The SEO investment optimized the firm for the wrong search layer. The AI Visibility Score identifies that gap and quantifies it.

Common questions

AI Visibility Score — FAQ

An AI Visibility Score is a composite diagnostic metric scored from 0 to 100 that measures how consistently a local service business appears in AI-generated search responses from systems including ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini. A score below 40 indicates effective invisibility to AI-generated local recommendations. The score is calculated across seven components: Citation Source Coverage, Query Retrieval Rate, Entity Recognition, Data Consistency, Content Extractability, Competitor Citation Gap, and Fan-Out Query Coverage.
A score above 70 indicates strong AI citation presence. A score of 40–70 indicates partial visibility with gaps a local competitor can exploit. A score below 40 means the business is effectively absent from AI recommendations for its primary service queries. The average across US local service businesses is 31 out of 100 — which means most businesses are in the lowest tier. Being at 50+ in a market where the average competitor is at 31 is a meaningful competitive advantage.
VisiGap calculates AI Visibility Scores by scanning 48–52 citation sources AI engines use to ground local recommendations, running simulated AI queries across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity for the business's primary service category and location, and evaluating structured data, entity definition, content extractability, and local data consistency across an 83-parameter diagnostic framework. The resulting score is a composite of seven weighted components totaling 100 points. The highest-weighted component is Citation Source Coverage at 25 points.
Yes — this is one of the most common findings in VisiGap audits. A business can hold the top Google ranking for its primary keyword and score below 30 on AI Visibility. The reason: traditional Google rankings depend on domain authority, backlinks, and keyword matching. AI engines depend on entity recognition, citation source consistency, structured content, and FAQ presence — signals most local business websites have not optimized for. The two signal sets are largely independent.
The most common causes are: missing or incorrect schema markup (AI cannot identify the business's service type); incomplete citation source coverage (business is absent from data sources AI uses for local grounding); NAP inconsistency (name, address, or phone mismatches across sources reduce AI confidence); no FAQ content (FAQ presence is the near-decisive citation signal — 78% of home service businesses have none); and thin service pages without city-specific, extractable content.
An SEO score measures a website's ability to rank in traditional search engine results — keyword rankings, domain authority, backlinks, page speed. An AI Visibility Score measures a business's ability to be retrieved and cited by AI-generated answer engines. The two are not correlated. A business spending $5,000/month on SEO can have strong traditional rankings and a score below 35 on AI Visibility. The signals AI engines use to decide what to cite are fundamentally different from the signals Google uses to decide what to rank.
